  • Reasons not to go into radiology

Posted by Unknown Member on September 17, 2020 at 8:39 am

It’s incredibly unscrupulous the manner in which radiologists in academics “promote” their field.  The entire field  is in disarray, and these “professors” have no clue, no desire, or are incapable of remedying the wide range of issues in our field.  Income salaries are large in decline as negotiating ability is in decline as more and more bad actors graduate from the already tainted programs.  I’d like to start a thread strictly of professionals in the field, in the private sector; to discuss all the ways in which this field is corrupted.
I don’t think folks should go into the field of radiology.

Just to correct a significant piece of misinformation –

Radiolgy salaries have been increasing for the last 5 or so years … usually in the low to mid single digits percentages per year.

There are plenty of reasons why a  medical student might think long & hard about considering a career in radiology, but *current* salary decline is not one of them.

Unfortunately, I strongly disagree with the individual in this response; who clearly lacks an understanding of basic economics.

On a large macro scale (and up until recently I was going to concede the micro scale to this individual, that perhaps in the past few years things have shown a slight glimmer of hope–but not so anymore, as a few days ago, government has decided to decrease radiology compensation even further); in any event, on a large macro scale, salaries have massively decreased for radiologists, and it is no longer professional nor responsible to fraudulently deceive young medical students to go into a field so widely corrupt with such little pay for most.

Since the 1980s, not taking into account inflation, radiology salaries have decreased on the order of 70-80%; and has gone down more and more and more.  Furthermore, current salaries are no longer on a level that should attract any talent to this field.  Simple basic economics; the US inflationary rate has been consistent at or about 1-2% per year for the past 30 years; compounded that is a minimum of 33% decrease in the value of the dollar.

      This is totally inappropriate.

This does not take into account the widespread massive range of folly the field is currently encumbered with.

The lack of sheer analysis, willpower, and veracity in this field is heavy.

If you are a medical student, know that you are going to be accompanied by some of the worst in this field, and some of  the most short sighted people that exist in medicine in general.

If you are not a troll and want a true dialog be honest in that the gig has changed, the compensation has changed.
In my area, the PP groups are either trying to get to a place where the members want either more $$ or more “work-life balance”
if more $$ win, cannot complain about all the work that must be done to earn it.
If time is important, cannot complain about the $$
If you, the OP knows of a better career in or out of medicine, you should let the medical students know
If you are as unhappy as u seem, get out of radiology or medicine
And don’t complain about your debts, you got into that yourself

I think the point is that whether or not I incurred loans, that folks will have a much more difficult time stabilizing themselves and establishing roots in any community they may choose.  I think you made an excellent point yourself therein, that should a medical student have loans, radiology is a very precarious and dangerous field to enter.  I would not advise students to go into a field that is so unstable, so precarious, so fraught with corruption, so fraught with job instability, so fraught with corporate takeovers, so fraught with turnover, so fraught with indecent folks, so fraught with lack of leadership, lacking in leadership.  I would simply not recommend it, not with loans—that’s for sure.

Everything that is being promoted to these kids needs to be fully vetted and light should be placed over whatever fodder is given to them.

The field is not merely no longer lucrative; it simply won’t sustain itself; and it is incredibly dangerous to go into–the people in this field are so incredibly and powerfully selfish, lack so much insight, and ultimately this field as it has in the past, no longer exists the way it should.  There is far too much corruption in the field of radiology.

What is your idea of a good field/specialty? Since radiology consists of “some of the worst in this field, and some of the most short sighted people that exist in medicine in general,” I assume you think most of the other medical specialties including hospitalist, emergency medicine, anesthesiologist, should be better? After all, hard to go lower than “worst in this field” with some of the “most short sighted” colleagues ever.

May want to enlighten medical students as to better alternatives if you’re going to tell them not radiology.

I CANNOT TELL IF YOU ARE FUNNY OR JUST A SILLY TROLL-MAN

Dear Medical Students, it is wise to look at options; discuss with many radiologists in PP or Academics – but chose the specialty, radiology or another that you enjoy as everything has its upsides and downsides

About that time of year again

OP is most likely an IMG troll trying to match and dissuade others

                Just for students…..

Due to demand for my labor I made mroe money in 2018 than I had ever made before in my career.  Then I made even more than that in 2019.

And, absent the Covid slowdown, I would be on pace to make even more in 2020.  (We took a slight pay cut and the moonlighting availability dropped from April through May)

Am I working hard? Yes.    Am I reading more total studies than ever? Yes.   Am I working from home a couple of days a week ad doing all of call/evening work in my underwear from my home office? Yes.

Yay for working in home in underwear as long as it is not for v rad and such! Once this insanity is over I will welcome back into the hospital every day.
