  • PICC lengths

Posting here cuz no one posts on the IR thread

Weve switched over to doing almost all piccs bedside due to covid and I keep underestimating or overestimating catheter length on the follow up CXR. Does anyone who do these routinely bedside have a good rule of thumb for how long to cut the catheters? Measuring over the patient roughly doesnt seem to help with my success rate.

35 cm right, 45 cm left, put in just above elbow so fixation doesn’t kink when bending the elbow. Works for most adults.

Our RNs who placed them had a table that they went by. It was ‘good enough’ most of the time.

Mark the wire at 45 and place it to 45. Shoot pcxr, trim and place the line to whatever length is appropriate based on that.

Good idea but way too time intensive for the RVUs.
