  • Owning your own PACS

Posted by Melenas on June 15, 2023 at 7:58 pm

How many groups in the country do you all think are paying for their own PACS?

Or do most groups rely on the hospital to provide this?

We do, but I would think only groups that own their own imaging centers or have multiple hospital contracts with different hospital systems need to. Its a significant cost but the convenience of having all cases flow to one PACS makes it worth it to us. You have to have a significant infrastructure with IT staff too.

Mine is hospital supplied/owned.  I’m an employee now, but even when my practice was PP, the hospital still supplied and owned home workstations.

Know of another hospital/health system that has employed docs and charges them a lease fee for home workstation.

I agree on imaging centers but typically a hospital wants its own PACS unless you are just doing telerad from their site. I have seen sites with an extra workstation so they can read from other sites although some read outside studies on the existing PACS too. You just have to make sure they dont get archived on the hospital site where they are being read. You may also have issues with worklists reading from a single station- from priorities as to what gets read when to archiving to even workstation calibration especialy if doing mammo remotely. IMHO better to have a seperate workstation even though its klugie as all get out to work this way if just reading from one extra outside site. If the rad group reads from more than 2 facilities having its own PACS and the studies the read routed through it makes the best sense overall. It’s costlier and a bit slower but much safer.

Large groups can afford their own PACS- small groups no.
group owned PACS cuts down on rad take home rvu comp.
PACS and dictation are part of the technical component of imaging- not reading fees.

Almost all hospitals will have their own PACS.
