  • Locums reccomendations

Posted by adeniyi81 on December 25, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Hello everyone I am approaching the end of my career looking to wind down and travel a little until I am old enough for medicare, I  will need some bucks for health insurance until then.  I am looking to do locums (mammo) part time for insurance and to have some fun money.  There are a few companies out there and I was looking for recommendations and what to avoid.

Are you looking for mammo only or mammo plus general?
With mammo there are probably some private groups you can contact directly and skip the locums company.

Yes mammo only. Just have concerns about malpractice coverage thats why I considered the locums company aspect.

Thats more of an insurance issue. Find a good medmal insurance broker and get yourself a ‘occurence’ policy that you can activate and deactivate as necessary.

There are so many locums agencies and they all seem to advertise the same gigs. I am under the impression that most are just hustlers who try to get their cut on a limited number of locums gigs. Most of those gigs are not working for radiology groups. They are filling holes in the schedule at hospitals and clinics.
As a ‘mammo only’, your customer base is going to be radiology groups. Once you have the insurance covered, I would contact every group in your licensed area and tell them that you are an experienced mammographer looking for x/y/z type of stints. Then contract with them directly.
Btw. Many medmal contracts held by a group have a locums provision where the group can cover a locums for x number of ‘instances’ and y number of days. You as the locums get a ‘certificate of coverage’ from the insurance for every ‘instance’ of providing coverage. So depending on who you work for, you may not have to hold your own medmal policy .

Agencies work with Groups and facilities, some are fill ins or vacation coverage and others are full FTE seats. They cover med mal, 1/3 with a tail, some pay weekly and others net 15. By working through an agency you avoid and issues of working directly, politics, contracts etc. You work as a 1099, IC through the agency, do your work and collect a check. Highly recommend if you are going to do locums on a steady basis to create an LLC for tax benefits.
