Investigation of a cash for Trump pardon scheme
Posted by btomba_77 on December 1, 2020 at 4:49 pm
Justice Investigating Cash for Trump Pardons
The Justice Department is investigating a potential crime related to funneling money to the White House or related political committee in exchange for a presidential pardon, [link=https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/01/politics/presidential-pardon-justice-department/index.html]CNN[/link] reports.
The case is the latest legal twist in the waning days of President Trumps administration after several of his top advisers have been convicted of federal criminal charges and as the possibility rises of Trump giving pardons to those whove been loyal to him.

Exchanging anything of value for an official act, such as granting a pardon, is a federal crime.
Campaign contributions can be a bribe if they are offered *in exchange* for that official act. https://t.co/jEhSBaYwVx

You would think the person that pardoned Blago would know this.

So intensely reported by CNN. As if they know what is criminal and what is not. Another fake story to move away from Jeff Zucker’s dishonest non-biased news reporting in the name of American Freedom and Truth.
Any word on the Hunters and Joes illegal crony deals yet with China and Russia?
What about supporting whistleblowers and their need to respected for doing their American duty? Lot’s of interesting stories of missing Ballots yesterday by people putting themselves in harms way legally to testify? Where is that trailer that had 24 Gaylords of ballots that was not allowed to unload? Could you imaging that happing at Amazon? Jeff Bezos would go nuts. Almost sounds like early Soprano trucking hi-jacking. Never put past a Hollywood story to become real.
Something smells and the needles pointing “Left”-

They got hands on redacted DOJ memos that show an investigation into a pardon. It certainly doesn’t look good. Per Dergon it appears the DOJ has made a statement that it’s more and investigation into the pardon seeking.

Youre not reading it right,Dan. Its not a refutation.
Pretend its a Trump tweet:
FAKE NEWS! what about Hunter Biden?!

Everyone knows Hunter is busy planting incriminating evidence via laptops for the FBI to discover.
Johnny Laptopseed.

And now you add the NYTimes (nycrimes) as a solid reporting institution? Please… You stated you wanted to be the party of adults because orange man wasn’t. Please step up and show yourselves. This story has no weight. it means nothing

Team Trump is a scandal du jour.

NYT preliminary look at the unsealed DOJ documents:
”
The Justice Department has been investigating whether intermediaries for a federal convict offered White House officials a bribe in exchange for a potential pardon or commutation from President Trump, according to [link=https://int.nyt.com/data/documenttools/justice-department-pardon-bribery-investigation/822b24993f8146fe/full.pdf]court documents[/link] unsealed by a federal judge on Tuesday.
The documents were heavily redacted, and it was unclear who may have been involved. Nothing directly tied Mr. Trump to the scheme, and the documents said no one had been charged.”
…
”
The information about the potential scheme was included in an opinion, dated Aug. 28, from the chief United States district judge for the District of Columbia, Beryl A. Howell, who was weighing whether to allow federal prosecutors to examine evidence like emails that may have been protected by attorney-client privilege.
Judge Howell granted the prosecutors access to the materials.”
___
When a judge decides to allow a piercing of attorney-client priv, there generally has to be a really strong case that there is some criminal activity.

DOJ statement says No government official was or is currently a subject or target of the investigation disclosed in this filing.”
So at this point it looks like it is the pardon seeker (and/or his legal team) under investigation. -

Trump expected to issue a wave of pardons today
interesting tidbit though:
Despite his recent eagerness to pardon, Trump’s clemency rate is lower than his predecessors’.
[ul][*]As of late November, Trump had granted clemency just 44 times the lowest total of any president since at least William McKinley, according to [link=https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/11/24/so-far-trump-has-granted-clemency-less-frequently-than-any-president-in-modern-history/]Pew Research Center.[/link] [/ul]

The Papadopoulos pardon serves as a particularly pointed jab by the president at the Russia investigation, which shadowed the first half of his term in office. It was a July 2016 tip about the young campaign volunteer that first led the FBI to open an investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign were conspiring with the Kremlin.
Todays pardon helps correct the wrong that Muellers team inflicted on so many people, the White House said in a statement Tuesday night.

Of the 45 pardons that Donald Trump has granted up until today, 40 of the 45, 88%, were either tied to one of his allies, someone who had special access to him, or was tied to something that politically benefited him personally.
Trump Prepares Sweeping Pardon List for Aides and Family
President Trump has prepared a sweeping list of individuals hes hoping to pardon in the final days of his administration that includes senior White House officials, family members, prominent rappers and possibly himself, [link=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-07/trump-prepares-pardon-list-for-aides-and-kin-and-maybe-himself]Bloomberg[/link] reports.
Trump is hoping to announce the pardons on Jan. 19 his final full day in office and his ideas are currently being vetted by senior advisers and the White House counsels office.
The biggest question facing his legal team may be whether the president has the authority to pardon himself.

I was under the impression in the legal circle a self pardon was a non-starter. You could essentially make yourself above the law.

No one knows yet. Hell… at the very least, it buys him a few years of legal challenges as the right to self-pardon works its way through the courts.-

Republican lawmakers have been asking for pardons for their roles in organizing the Capitol riots
Several Republican lawmakers who are alleged to have been involved in the rally that preceded the deadly riot on the US Capitol have sought clemency from Trump before he leaves office, but after meeting with his legal advisers for several hours on Saturday, the President decided he would not grant them, according to two people familiar with his plans. The fear of legal exposure is not limited to Republicans who promoted or spoke at the rally, including Reps. Andy Biggs, Mo Brooks and Paul Gosar. Those who participated, organized and fundraised for it are also concerned, sources told CNN, including his eldest son Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle, who both spoke at the rally.
Top figures associated with the groups that helped organize it — including Women for America First and Turning Point Action, the political action committee arm of Turning Point USA — have also voiced private concern about legal repercussions.

So, too, was Trump warned that pardons for Republican lawmakers who had sought them for their role in the Capitol insurrection would anger the very Senate Republicans who will determine his fate in an upcoming impeachment trial.
White House counsel Pat Cipollone and another attorney who represented Trump in his first impeachment trial, Eric Herschmann, offered the grave warnings as Trump, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner listened. Other lawyers joined by telephone. They all told Trump he should not pardon himself, his family or any GOP lawmakers in a prospective manner unless he was prepared to list specific crimes.Top figures associated with the groups that helped organize it — including Women for America First and Turning Point Action, the political action committee arm of Turning Point USA — have also voiced private concern about legal repercussions, a person familiar tells CNN.

It’s like the night before christmas.
Going through with the impeachment after he leaves doesn’t really serve a purpose. All it does is keep his ‘movement’ alive. Better off to just shun him and his inner circle from polite society.-

I suppose it depends on whether you believe Trump has no political future.
Personally, given his continued high support with the base, I think he could still be a powerful … and strongly destructive… political force after he leaves.
So conviction and removal … particularly aimed at being prohibited from ever holding public office again, would help further diminish his future strength.
Yes, the base might howl now for a few weeks, but by 2022 he will be a guaranteed non player-

Donald Trump has privately told confidants that, should he be re-elected president, he could pardon any of his allies if they face charges from the Biden-era Justice Department in two major probes.
The former president has told some of those close to him that the pardons would be for higher-level people and could come early in his time in office, effectively wiping away a multi-year effort to hold powerful people and their cohorts legally accountable for their actions during and after Trumps first term.
