How can radiology help limit COVID-19 transmission?

If we all recall, the shut down was not for containment. The shut down was to flatten the curve so our ICUs arent overrun. If a large amount of people have already contracted the virus, easing back in should not overwhelm the system.

Anyone hear about rads in NYC being asked to help the front line? Is this true?

One of the hospitals that we cover have said absolutely no to home workstations. Ironic since their IT folks and many of the executives are working from home

How are administrators able to keep their fat salaries if they aren’t alive?-
I know administrators who are in. I also know a lot of regular staff who are in, nurses, PAs, NPs, managers, techs, aides, registrars, secretarial staff, ancillary staff including janitors. And rads & physicians, ED docs, etc. In some very hot spots.
Everyone is scared but they show up.
This is no damned nothingburger to them. Theyre on the front line.

Nothingburger killing doctors and nurses.

No one should be thinking in terms of maximum shutdown, it is an idiotic construct. When you see an end to the rise in new cases in an area you can scale back. If we had sufficient testing we would understand the spread and plan more efficiently…unfortunately the gross incompetence of the current administration locked us into a more draconian response

When Can Lockdowns End?

[link=https://apnews.com/265bf955804ee3d6f9460096756059ce]Associated Press[/link]: Scientists are reluctant to predict exactly when restrictions could be safely loosened, but based on what theyve observed in China the first country struck by the new virus some relief could come approximately six to eight weeks after lockdowns are implemented. That is based on the assumption that cases could peak two or three weeks after lockdowns begin, and gradually decline for the next two or three weeks.
While we may yearn for a clear timeline for when life will return to normal, scientists say that isnt exactly the right question. Routines wont resume exactly as they were for several months, or longer but that doesnt mean well all be stuck in total lockdowns until then.-
Neither China, Korea nor Japan locked down the entire country.

And as Dalai says, “they” are different, “they” are smaller. “Americans would never agree.”
I think that’s nothing but BS but the fact is that we do need some sort of logical and rational plan but we also have a large portion of the media saying this is nothing but the flu and a conspiracy. So how do you talk to anyone who thinks you are part of a conspiracy?
Most people don’t live in NYC and this feels a lot like the 1970’s when the front page of the New York Post or Daily News was Washington’s message, “New York City, DROP DEAD!” To underline that I will bet that the majority, if not all the posters who posted that this is the flu, a nothingburger, the “cure is worse than the disease” people live in areas with little COVID activity and don’t have a goddamned clue what’s going on in NYC. And agin, since NYC is blue, don’t care. -
Good Lord. Excluding the insane fringe on both sides, no one wants anyone, anywhere to die unnecessarily.
The most rapid increase in the country is in deep red Louisiana. And I’m sick of the whole “blue/red” thing anyway, as if everyone in a given state thinks exactly alike, based on who at least 50.0001% of the state population voted for in some recent election. Just fosters division and hate. Which is, I’m starting to think, one of the things the internet is best at.
You know what, whatever state you live in I can GUARANTEE YOU that most people in your state would like most people in any other state. Or country for that matter. And I can guarantee that there are people in your state/country etc you wouldn’t particularly like if you go to know them. If you don’t think so you so haven’t gotten to know a geographically diverse sample of people. I’ve lived all across this country (literally) and traveled extensively. You know what? Most people are pretty nice. I’ve lived in NYC. You know what? Most New Yorkers are nice. Great people. MOST PEOPLE ARE GOOD PEOPLE. Even most people who don’t vote the way you do are good people.
Was disgusted to see efforts on both sides to shove things they want that have nothing to do with this crisis into the legislation (this has nothing to do with abortion– you can resume trying to ban it later right wing. And beyond suspending interest payments on student loans, which was done, this has nothing to do with the complex and screwed up student loan issue– don’t try to hold the country hostage demanding massive forgiveness of student loans Elizabeth Warren. You can pick that fight back up later too). Obviously I haven’t looked in any detail at the legislation, but hopefully our Senators actually did their jobs.
Trump is basically a clown show at this point. I can’t listen to him anymore.
I do think this is very much Joe Biden’s election to lose now. Unfortunately he may be the guy who can lose it. I really think Klobuchar would be a great next President.

My plan was to stop posting and statements like this are the reason why. Instead I will use this final post to say that I have no idea where people are from unless they tell me and I have no idea what their political affiliation is unless they state it. I don’t speculate with vitriol and this type of speculation should have no place in this discussion.
Everyone of us in this discussion care tremendously about what is happening in hot spots like NYC. We worry about what will happen to us, our family, friends colleagues etc.. I doubt there will be anyone of us who is spared the horror of losing someone close to us. We should prepare ourselves to do whatever we can to combat suffering and death. Some of us are on the front lines and reporting back. Information from them will be vital to how we proceed in the next days, weeks and months.
Looking at the data and making predictions about what the final mortality rate is and suggesting that it may be a lot lower than predicted should at least be celebrated if it turns out to be true. Starting social distancing and then watching closely to determine the optimum time to reopen and doing that quickly when safe is smart. I was hoping a reasoned discussion about how the data can be interpreted in many ways and that there is some good evidence that we will come out of all of this in a lot better shape would be uplifting in a time of dread.
Some ridicule from those that think they know better is expected. That’s fine. Making statements about what political spectrum they come from and how they don’t care about their fellow human beings is not. For many reasons but probably most importantly because they are incorrect. -
As a person living with my family within THE hotspot, I find it difficult to parse the “real” meaning of persons alleging this is overblown and that as medical people we have to just accept people dying and some such words to that effect.
Very easy for people to say who are safely not in the middle of this to declare deaths are acceptable.
Someone explain to me the nuance of those multiple statements please. I don’t feel the “nothing personal” message. -

Look at the chart of deaths by state on The NY Times. We are all in the middle of this, or going to be.
Deaths per 1M population:
NY 24
WA 19
Louisiana 18
good news:
California. 2 deaths/million, and they aren’t super early in the process.
Washington has slowed things significantly. Can’t imagine they will overtake NY. La very well might. -
I am looking at local hospitals being swamped by COVID, deciding how to place 2-4 people on a single vent. Death rates don’t show people who haven’t yet died. Just because they aren’t dead now is not proof it cannot happen.

Please come back when we are all proven right and we’ll discuss with honesty and clarity what the next best steps are. Block the three amigos if you must. You are a sane thinker, it would be a shame to drown you out for their idiocy, they are the antifa of message boards. Not a coincidence. -
Anyone know of a rad tech, rad nurse or radiologist that has tested positive yet?

Just got the same message from our health system. We were told it was “an optics” issue. So even though we have essentially shut down the hospital for visitation, our brilliant health care admin is telling us that “for optics reasons” we have to show up.
-
I think the optics reflect very negatively…
on the hospital and administration.
It says that they are willing to put their staff at risk solely to satisfy non-clinical considerations
Shame on them

So ironic since this is what every corporate and governor nothing burger is doing, it’s just baked into this sick blame culture and PC society cake.
They put us all at risk for the possibility of “saving” … no more people than ever year’s flu.
Again, virtue signalling by the guys who already have milions and secure jobs. Great stuff.

At my institution they are also banning technologists and nurses as well as other health care providers from protecting themselves and wearing masks, so as to not “scare the patients”. Crazy.
NPR doing an interview with a resident … removed from rotation for refusing to remove his mask.
asinine.
-
A few little things we can do to contribute (should be obvious):
Wear masks
Avoid crowded areas
Wash hands frequently
But consider ordering more takeouts/deliveries and support local restaurants that are struggling. I’m starting to do that now.
Consider planning for your next vacation, which can be months from now. Some financial risk in that but it will give airline companies, tourist industry some bail-out cash.

?
Come on. The trolling and hatred on this board was tolerable and sarcastically amusing when we were talking about the course of corporate medicine and medicare for all etc..
How about we save these COVID threads for thoughtful analysis of incoming data?
There have been times when I have thought IB deserved some constructive criticism based on behavior. Now is not one. Read what he says now. Don’t react to your previous hatred. If he says something that does not hold up to logic then call him on it with a more sound argument.
ADHD, how dare you try to bring the discussion back to data analysis?
