Reading Tim Piazza’s story. Horrible, heartbreaking.

Decided to look up list of hazing deaths on wiki. They are strikingly similar through the years. Bullying with alcohol, water, trauma or exhaustion.

I think this is so far beyond hazing.  It’s looking very much criminal, and just down right shameful that no one bothered to help this kid.

I was in a fraternity and enjoyed it.

But in my later years I have come to believe that the entire Greek system should be dismantled. It is a net detriment to campus life. From substance abuse to rape to hazing to racism … get rid of the whole thing, I say.

I never experienced frat life but I agree with you.  Can’t imagine what that kid’s parents are going through right now

Agree 1000000%. Frats (and sororities for that matter) are nothing more than anachronistic little clubs that allow a group of kids to form a gang-like we’re-better-than-you attitude. They accomplish nothing, they do little more than justify and cover for bad behavior, and encourage the little miscreants to exclude others simply because they can.  The (VERY) minimal amount of community service (for those not already prosecuted) can be easily quadrupled by any kid with adequate motivation.

From a liability standpoint alone, the universities should shut them all down yesterday.

I was not part of a fraternity, but grew up in a neighborhood with many fraternities and sororities.  Except for the occasional women group chanting, I remember the sororities being fairly good neighbors.  Can’t say as much for the fraternities…  just louder, messier and more drunk behavior on the weekends…  well, actually they would typically start Thursday evening.

No, I had no idea what the chants mean and I still don’t know what the chants mean.  I remember a couple times I tried to listen to what they were chanting but I could not understand one word.

[b]Pennsylvania college bans fraternities, sororities after allegations of racist, homophobic and misogynistic behavior[/b][/link]

Swarthmore College announced Friday that it has banned fraternities and sororities from its campus after two fraternity chapters recently disbanded over allegations of racist, misogynistic and homophobic behavior against past members.

Fraternities and sororities will no longer exist at the College, President Valerie Smith said [link=https://www.swarthmore.edu/news-events/update-student-social-events-and-community-standards-president-smith]in a statement[/link].

The voluntary disbanding of Phi Psi and Delta Upsilon reflects a broader change in student needs and desires. Exclusive, dues-paying social organizations no longer effectively meet the needs of our residential liberal arts environment.

The announcement came a little over a week after recommendations were [link=https://www.swarthmore.edu/sites/default/files/assets/documents/presidents-office/Task%20Force%20Report%20-%20Final.pdf]filed in a report[/link] from the Task Force for Student Social Events and Community Standards, which was charged with examining social life on campus.

The college should limit parties with alcohol during the first several weeks of the fall semester, and, in particular, we recommend that the practice of allowing a Disorientation party be ended, the report said, adding that the Office of Student Engagement should play a role in supporting and encouraging a new era of student party hosting.

Fridays announcement came in the aftermath of a document dump which contained allegations that members of Swarthmore’s Phi Psi chapter made rape jokes and racist comments and engaged in hazing, [link=https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/11/us/swarthmore-college-bans-fraternities/index.html]according to CNN[/link]. The documents also reportedly referenced the Delta Upsilon chapters rape attic and rape tunnel, which the fraternity denied existed.

They are non productive in the academia world. They do nothing but glorify themselves as elitist. My daughter was asked to join one at her college. She reviewed them first, actually interviewed them during the process and found out they did nothing but fund raise, spend money and bitched a lot. it was expensive to be apart of and she would have gained nothing in return she felt.

I am curious since I was not part of one. Who on this blog felt they gained something in their Life or Career from being part of a Group?

I know many people who have gained in career.  That’s a real thing … the people who are “in to it” are often deep in to it for life and will pry open doors on behalf of other brothers.

I had some good friends.  I’m not close to them anymore, but many of them have remained close for life. They take vacations together, their families are friends etc.

[b]Frat President Chews Out Brothers Infected With Covid-19 For Not Sanitizing Balls Before Teabagging Pledges

                      [/b]

Urging his brothers to not be total dumbasses and let their Covid-infested nards ruin rush week, University Of Idahos Theta Chi president Christopher Allen reportedly chewed out members that had been infected with coronavirus Friday for not sanitizing their balls before teabagging pledges.

All right, guys, I really shouldnt have to say this again at this point, but if youre going to slap your scrotum on a newbies face and make him lick it, that shit better taste like straight-up Purell, said Allen, adding that hed specifically requested hand sanitizer stations to be placed around the house so that residents could easily disinfect their balls, penises, or assholes before forcing freshmen to perform lewd acts on them.

Im just sayingI know lots of you are running fevers or whatever, so its extra important that even if youre blackout drunk, you put that shit in the sink, use antibacterial soap, and sing Happy Birthday twice. If we do this Covid stuff right, I know that we can drop our pants and sit on these pledges faces in a safe, healthy way. But if we dont, say goodbye to fall formalespecially you, Kyle, your balls are disgusting.

At press time, Allen added that it was also of the utmost importance for Theta Chi brothers to set a good example for the rest of the campus by always wearing a mask when socializing with girls, especially after they have passed out.[/QUOTE]

Foltz, a sophomore business student, [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/542066-ohio-college-student-dies-after-alleged-hazing-incident]died in March[/link] after allegedly being forced to drink large amounts of alcohol during a fraternity hazing ritual at Bowling Green’s chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The fraternity has since been stripped of its status as student organization by Bowling Green.
