  • Do you watch TV while you work

Posted by afazio.uk_887 on June 9, 2023 at 3:02 pm

I often have some downtime in between cases when reading from home. I watch a lot of YouTube. Thinking about watching shows on Netflix or HBOmax. I also check my portfolio too much.
    Thoughts?

You need more cases to read!…We are all wired differently.  I myself could not pay enough attention to follow an actual show in between cases-not that I really have the time given our OP list is consistently backed up

Not typically, unless there’s a game or golf tournament on I want to watch.

Youtube playlists are like podcasts. Most of the time you don’t have to pay full attention. They’re perfect.

We had a TV on overnight while on call recently. It was nice to know it was on, even if we didn’t watch it much. Made the atmosphere feel lighter.

Something light playing in the background can help me focus

Yes I watch Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prim video, but only play things that I can let run in the background and I not pay attention to for awhile if I have a tough case. Basically, if there was new episode of Yellowstone or a movie I really wanted to watch, I could not watch it while working. either stuff I’ve seen and want to watch again – Bosch, Friday Night Lights, etc – or some youtube instructional like Alexander Bromely strength training stuff.

I don’t watch anything while working. Too much of a distraction for me. I do listen to podcast or music.

I have a bunch of websites I cycle through, but could never divert my attention to a TV show. I did have the world cup games on or occasional another sporting event if i am on call or evenings

World cup was perfect. Keep it on in the background and when the crowd makes some noise, take a look at the game. No way is a TV show or movie an option. On the daily it’s Spotify for 8 hours and usually an entire artists collection in that time. Knock out all of post syd Barrett pink floyd, all of Pearl Jam on another day, Jay Z’s entire library, etc…

                      Occasionally big time sports game.

But really, watching something is a form of multitasking, which is not a real thing. You switch tasks, and distract between tasks. So taking a break to do something else I get, but the illusion of doing two things at once is not real. Anyway, when Im working Im engrossed, a tv show would be just white noise. Thats why telephone calls are so annoying, they pull me out of the trance. In fact, its part of the meditative aspect of the job, Im sort of in a trance, why would I mess with that?

This is true.  I am also usually “in the zone” when I am trying to melt the list.  Usually I have my headphones on and am listening to music.  However – during slow times I sometimes feel I could watch a TV show or something while reading but it could be a big distraction or I would end up missing most of the plot of the show.
Youtube is all short stuff so makes it kinda easy to browse and not lose focus on the work.

When Im going through a stack of screening mammograms using MagView, its usually a podcast Im listening to. Or a golf tournament. I can have golf on silent in the background when running through inpatient/outpatient/ER normal work but I cant be actively listening to something, unless music.

Not able to watch anything because too busy and basically never have downtime. Do listen to music and sometimes podcasts, but even the podcasts can be tough because so focused on reading cases.

Yeah, you can’t really watch something that requires active attention at all times to follow. Shows, movies, podcasts etc that you can follow by paying attention 20% of the time aurally or 10% of the time visually are perfect. Some examples I use:
                      Sports talk shows and podcasts.
                      Video game review shows.
                      Relationship advice shows.
                      Jeapordy.
                      Movies/shows I’ve already seen.
                      War documentaries.
                      Astrophysics/Astronomy explanation shows.

Stuff that wouldn’t work for me:
A Movie/show I haven’t seen, that requires me paying attention to the whole story.
A sports game on a team I follow.
Visual documentaries with very little relevant audio.

When my daughter was about 7 or so, there was a “take-your-daughter-to-work” day.  That evening, she announced at dinner that she wanted to be a radiologist because daddy “goes to work in his pajamas (scrubs), watches TV all day, and talks on the phone.”

OP, I’d suggest checking your portfolio less; you’ll be happier.  Anyone I’ve ever known who’s into playing markets seems neurotic and stressed, if not downright miserable.

I usually have a YT video of a burning fireplace playing on a non-PACS computer in my office either at home or work.  Local NPR station has an HD2 stream with jazz that’s nice most of the time.

If I have downtime between cases, I’ll either do some online CME or watch YT vids on home maintenance/repair (e.g. Honest Carpenter, Everyday Home Repair, etc.).  What can I say?  I like to fix $#!t around the house.  This past weekend, I ran a new circuit in the downstairs storage area for a freezer; YT was very useful to learn how to work with EMT and do wiring to code.

Growing up I had a neighbor who remodeled his house, did the electrical himself.
                      House burned down.
So then he rebuilt it, did the electrical himself.
                      House burned down again.

                      Our dog bit his kid.
                      We said we were sorry.
                      He bit her again.
We had to put the dog down.

Your point is well-taken and you’re not the first to question the possible hazard of doing my own electrical work.  In 40+ years of doing it, I haven’t had an issue (granted, past experience is no guarantee of future success) and I’d like to think I have enough experience to know when to call a pro (imagining your childhood neighbor might have said the same, LOL).  For example, a few years ago I wanted to get a whole house backup generator and briefly considered trying to do the install myself.  When I started researching the process, I quickly gave up that idea.

Sadly, even hiring a pro is no guarantee of quality work.  Last year, as part of a remodel I changed out some outlets and switches in part of the house that were original (about 20 years old; done by an electrical contractor).  Found out a couple of the grounds weren’t securely attached, one outlet didn’t even have a ground attached, and all of them used back-stabs instead of screwed down terminals.  Another time I changed out a light fixture over a bathroom mirror and found the electrical cable just poked through the drywall, wired into the fixture (no junction box!).  Finally, I’d hired an electrician to run some wiring for an outdoor deck and fortunately was home when he came to do the job.  He was going to use indoor EMT couplings and run Romex NM through the EMT, both big no-no’s in wet locations.  He seemed surprised I knew what I was talking about and pushed back a little until I pulled out my phone and asked “Do you want me to look up the NEC reference for you?”

I actually find this discussion very interesting. I am definitely in the minority as I watch something on one monitor while I’m on call or the late guy and there is time between cases. I have for over a decade. I don’t think it takes away from my concentration because I’m not watching anything while I am reading, only between cases. And as I said, it seems to manage my ADHD fairly well. No meds required….ooh, something shiny!…

…I would not however be able to manage any kind of work with headphones on. THAT would make me lose every bit of concentration I have. No way could I read a single study with something playing in my head.  Sure CME sounds great if that’s your thing, but how much CME can you really do? I can and do watch at least an hour of video on any given late shift or call shift. Standard day shifts are too busy to do anything except grab a coffee from the machine next door.

I don’t think I have any spare time to watch TV during my shifts. If I did have spare time I’d rather just take a 20-30min break to walk to a coffee place and back rather than half-heartedly watch some part of a tennis match, but it is very rare that even 20mins would go unnoticed. In a lot of other professions u can socialize half the day, like people going out for lunch at work, even if you’re antisocial that’s still better than not being able to do this.

Well, she didn’t become a radiologist.  LOL.

Ended up going to art school.  Is happy, content and is a fine, well-adjusted person.  She’s also been off the payroll since college.  When she expressed an interest in art school, I told her I’d get her through with no debt but that once she graduated, it was up to her to figure out how to pay for her existence.  We’ve both held up our respective ends of the deal.

As for how she sees radiology now (she’s approaching 30), I really don’t know.  I’ll have to ask next time we speak.  It seems to me that she sees me somewhat like the father character on the sit-com “$#@! my dad says”– a crusty old codger who speaks his, often non-PC & non-woke, mind.  This is amusing to me as it’s not how I see myself but each of us sees ourselves through a glass darkly, eh?

podcasts and youtube, mainly just for background noise, sitting in a room with nothing but the sound of computer fans and PSUs humming drives me crazy.

I’ve been listening to Spotify music lately when zoned in and reading cases.
