Death Penalty

A record-low 54% of Americans consider the death penalty to be morally acceptable, marking a six-percentage-point decrease since last year. This finding, from Gallup’s May 1-13 Values and Beliefs poll, is in line with [link=https://news.gallup.com/poll/268514/americans-support-life-prison-death-penalty.aspx]polling last fall[/link] that showed decreased public support for the death penalty and a record-high preference for life imprisonment over the death penalty as a better punishment for murder.
Gallup has measured Americans’ beliefs about the moral acceptability of the death penalty and numerous other social issues each May since 2001.
This year, 40% of U.S. adults think the death penalty is morally wrong, the highest in Gallup’s 20-year trend. The high point in the public’s belief that the death penalty is morally acceptable, 71%, was in [link=http://news.gallup.com/poll/22915/republicans-democrats-differ-what-morally-acceptable.aspx]2006[/link]. That year and again in [link=https://news.gallup.com/poll/27757/americans-rate-morality-social-issues.aspx]2007[/link], it topped the list of issues rated for moral acceptability.
The latest decrease in the public’s tolerance for the death penalty is largely owed to political liberals and moderates. While two-thirds of conservatives still consider it to be morally acceptable, moderates (56%) and liberals (37%) are at their lowest levels since 2001.[/QUOTE]

The resurgence of the death penalty was the result of bleeding heart judges and jail administrators letting murderers back out on the street after 5 and 10 year terms. If we can assure that those who have proven that they cannot coexist with civilized society are kept under lock and key, there is little need for a death penalty.
DC police just arrested a 16 year old for 4 murders and 8 shootings he committed over a span of 2 months. We can hire all the social workers we want, its not gonna fix the problems with the wiring in this kids head.

Is it cheaper/faster? Takes too long to get these people from conviction to execution.
-
Just abolish the death penalty, especially for a “pro-life” Party. At least the Vatican has that part right and consistent.
-
-
I’ll trade death penalty for abortion any day. 800,000 abortions a year and like 20 executions per year.
I always find it laughable that liberals use that “pro-life” line on the death penalty when we’re talking about adults who have done a terrible crime against society vs. unborn humans.
But yeah, where do I sign up for eliminating both the death penalty and abortion? I like the trade.-
Agree. The libs on this board will not. Just consider the death penalty. 4th term abortion. They would be all in on that.

Set criminals free. Legalize 20 million criminals. Remove death penalty for murderers and rapists.
Kill babies.
Cool.
I’m still waiting for the Dem establishment to tell me the magical minute the fetus becomes a human they care about.

What the regulation seeks to change is to allow any execution method legal in the state where it is carried out. Iirc Idaho allows firing squad. Current death row is in Indiana, so unless Indiana adds new options or the feds start moving death penalty inmates to other states for execution, it probably won’t make much of a practical difference.

Ohio house is also floating to abolish the death penalty.

[/link]
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a government appeal to reinstate the death penalty for [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/07/31/boston-marathon-bombers-death-sentence-overturned-new-trial-ordered-determine-sentence/5558405002/]Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev[/link], granting review of a lower court’s ruling that errors during the trial had tainted the sentencing.
If the justices overturn the appeals court, Tsarnaev’s death sentence could be reinstated.
Tsarnaev, 27, was convicted of dozens of crimes in the 2013 terror attack that killed three people and [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/05/14/boston-marathon-bombing-sentence/27336839/]received a death sentence in 2015[/link]. But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit threw out the death sentence last year, finding that the judge in the trial failed to ensure a fair jury after wall-to-wall media coverage of the attack.
Then-Attorney General William Barr promised to appeal the decision and the Justice Department followed through in October. Government lawyers told the court that unless the justices took action in the case, prosecutors would have to retry the penalty phase of the trial, forcing victims of the attack to take the stand again.
A reversal could put President Joe Biden in a difficult position because during his campaign he promised to push for the approval of legislation to eliminate the death penalty.

Ernest Johnson was sentenced to death in the [link=https://www.columbiatribune.com/article/20151101/News/311019925]1994 killings of three convenience store[/link] employees during a robbery. In 2008, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and argued the drug used for executions in Missouri, pentobarbital, could cause painful seizures.
Johnson requested Missouri execute him instead by firing squad, a practice not used in the state since 1864. The high court Monday declined to hear the appeal without offering an explanation, but its three [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/06/29/federal-death-penalty-supreme-court-allows-executions-resume/3199174001/]liberal justices dissented from that decision[/link].
“He asks that the courts decide between an execution that is cruel’ and one that is ‘unusual,'” wrote [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/04/07/supreme-court-justice-stephen-breyer-warns-against-packing-bench/7116124002/]Associate Justice Stephen Breyer[/link] in one of those dissents.“The Eighth Circuit’s decision punishes Johnson for failing to anticipate significant changes in the law,” wrote [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/08/08/justice-sonia-sotomayor-supreme-court-liberal-hispanic-decade-bench/1882245001/]Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor[/link] in one of the dissents Monday. “Worse, it ensures that Johnsons claim will never be heard on the merits. Missouri is now free to execute Johnson in a manner that, at this stage of the litigation, we must assume will be akin to torture given his unique medical condition.”

Oddly enough I thought states were bringing back firing squads because the drugs are unavailable.

[b]Governor Wont Stop Execution Despite Plea from Pope[/b][/h1]
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) wont stop the execution Tuesday of Ernest Lee Johnson, saying he believes the evidence showed the intellectually disabled man was fully aware of his crime, the [link=https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/parson-won-t-stop-execution-of-intellectually-disabled-missouri-man/article_e1d6ca28-0f36-5846-850f-cb2b7a0d6f78.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1]St. Louis Post-Dispatch[/link] reports.
The announcement came amid pleas for Parson to spare the life of Johnson, 61, from Pope Francis, a former Missouri governor, members of Congress and faith-based groups, who want the governor to halt execution, which is scheduled for Tuesday.-
They flipped his off switch tonight. Its kind of a rough subject. Im all for applying the death penalty for heinous crimes. He killed three people. But was he slow? I dont know what theyre basing that on. Guess hes in front of the ultimate character judge now.

[h1][b]Justices Reinstate Death Penalty for Marathon Bomber[/b][/h1]
The Supreme Court on Friday reinstated the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, convicted in the 2013 attack that killed three people and left hundreds injured, the [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/04/supreme-court-reinstates-death-penalty-boston-marathon-bomber-dzhokhar-tsarnaev/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=wp_politics]Washington Post[/link] reports.
The vote was 6 to 3, with the liberal justices in dissent.—
Pretty clear that the death penalty is full speed ahead at the Federal level in the US
-
WTF is this necessary???? WTF would the Supremes find it necessary to overrule an earlier decision about not killing Tsarnaev? Do they plan on opening a popcorn stand during the execution? Entertainment value?
It certainly has zero to do with justice that a life sentence would not serve.
Good to know these Judges are Conservative Christians following Jesus’ teachings about killing.

F em. Strap his butt to a crockpot bomb just like he did to the people in Boston.

[h1]Pennsylvania governor says he won’t sign any execution warrants, calls for abolishing death penalty[/h1] Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, who took office last month after having been state attorney general, said the system is fallible, and the outcome is irreversible.
“I will not issue any execution warrants during my term as governor. When an execution warrant comes to my desk, I will sign a reprieve each and every time,” Shapiro, a Democrat, [link=https://www.governor.pa.gov/newsroom/governor-shapiro-announces-he-will-not-issue-any-execution-warrants-during-his-term-calls-on-general-assembly-to-abolish-the-death-penalty/]said[/link] at Mosaic Community Church in West Philadelphia, adding that the first execution warrant since he was sworn in crossed his desk last week.
“The Commonwealth shouldnt be in the business of putting people to death. Period. I believe that in my heart. This is a fundamental statement of morality. Of whats right and wrong.”
Shapiro made his comments alongside state legislators, community activists and criminal justice advocates, noting that his view on capital punishment had evolved over the years.[/QUOTE]
