Copy of DEA
Posted by dwaynen31 on April 6, 2023 at 6:23 amIs it routine for practice admin to request a copy of your DEA for credentialing purposes? Ive never had this request before and feel a bit apprehensive about a copy of my DEA possibly being compromised.

Another example of bureaucratic creep? Seems among the most obvious. They ask this for tele people too!-
When I read for the Coast Guard (i.e. Federal Government) they required the name and address of the MIDDLE SCHOOL I attended. Yes, as in 7th/8th grade of education. Imagine if I had failed wood shop or home economics!!!! They never would have hired me.

Had to submit that on every single credentialing application.

Yes. Makes no sense but the credentialing ppl need to check off the boxes of the info they need. DEA reg # is just another check box.

Hospitals think it’s some kind of ‘good conduct certificate’. Haven’t written for an opiate since fellowship. Makes no sense for a radiologist or pathologist.

I stopped maintaining DEA 5-6 years ago.
I just write on credentialing do not maintain DEA. Give them old DEA registration number if they ask for it.
Havent had a problem.

I tried that – our hospital system actually requires it. Best to just have it.-
This is routine and required for credentialing at every hospital I have encountered (10+)

Don’t you need a DEA if you do procedures and/or “administer” conscious sedation.

If you want to prescribe narcs like fentanyl for moderate sedation, yes you will need a DEA. You need to be set up as an authorized prescriber in the hospital pharmacy system so the RN can pull the fenta doses from the pyxis.
Now, a few states have their own state administered controlled substances license. Also, if you practice in several different states, you need separate DEAs for each state (that changed a few years ago). I have managed to get credentialing departments to waive the requirement for a state specific license if I only provide teleradiology services. But they all wanted a valid DEA from my main location.

If you are worried about being compromised- just don’t check the boxes that allows your license to prescribe narcotics or schedule 1 drugs.
