• Control of Senate 2022

Never too soon ….

[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2020/12/15/ron-johnson-trump-political-future-445871]Politico[/link] -Ron John Gambles His Future on Trump

Ron Johnson is linking himself to President Donald Trumps election challenge as tightly as possible as he decides whether to run for reelection to a must-win Senate seat for Republicans,”

Johnson, a steadfast Trump ally who has endeared himself to the president with his various investigative pursuits, is defending his approach, even as he faces a possible reelection campaign in a state that President-elect Joe Biden won in November. And Democrats are taking notice.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ron-johnson-trump-election-senate/2020/12/15/8e34c190-3e60-11eb-a402-fba110db3b42_story.html]Washington Post[/link]: Ron Johnson could take his last stand Wednesday as Trumps most stalwart Senate defender.

(It requires at least one member in each House to voice a challenge to the electoral results. As of now, McConnell is asking all GOP senators to *not* challenge. ….. Rand Paul aand Ron Johnson are the only ones saying “We’ll see”)

Trump Backs Primary Challenge Against John Thune

President Trump [link=https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1341547750710800385]backed a 2022 challenge[/link] to Sen. John Thune (R-SD), tweeting that his political career will be over and calling Thune a [link=https://politicaldictionary.com/words/rino/]RINO[/link] and Mitchs boy.
He added: South Dakota doesnt like weakness.

(Not like a Dem is going to win in SD … the GOP would need to put up someone worse than Roy Moore to lose that seat)
Trump Threatens GOP Senators as he Eyes 2022
President Trump [link=https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1342245390540804096?s=20]tweets[/link]:
I saved at least 8 Republican Senators, including Mitch, from losing in the last Rigged (for President) Election. Now they (almost all) sit back and watch me fight against a crooked and vicious foe, the Radical Left Democrats. I will NEVER FORGET!

President Trump has instructed his top political advisers to begin monitoring potential 2022 GOP primary targets, as he lashes out at fellow Republicans whom he deems disloyal.

With less than a month until Trump leaves office, his team has begun mapping out what his post-White House political infrastructure will look like. Until now, the planning has centered on deploying resources to defeat Democrats in midterm races. But advisers are now also keeping tabs on Republican incumbents.

Trump in recent weeks has used his Twitter feed to attack Republicans for failing to get behind his unfounded claims the election was stolen with him. But his team is now taking more formal steps such as tracking their public comments with an eye toward possibly marshaling the presidents political operation to replace them with more Trump-friendly figures.

Donor Backlash Fuels GOP Alarm About Senate
Republicans are worried that a corporate backlash stirred by the deadly Capitol insurrection could crimp a vital stream of campaign cash, complicating the partys prospects of retaking the Senate in the next election, the [link=https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-capitol-siege-senate-elections-richard-burr-ac1ad237047035403060dadb4b80f90e]AP[/link] reports.

The GOP already faces a difficult Senate map in 2022, when 14 Democratic-held seats and 20 Republican ones will be on the ballot. That includes at least two open seats that Republicans will be defending because of the retirements of GOP Sens. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Richard Burr of North Carolina.

Chevron is one of the companies that admonished the insurrection. However, their CEO apparently funded it with corporate $

What GOP Retirements Mean For The 2022 Senate Map
[link=https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-all-those-gop-retirements-mean-for-the-2022-senate-map/]FiveThirtyEight[/link]: Its only January 2021, but three Republican senators have already announced their intentions to retire in 2022. Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina said back in 2016 that his current term would be his last, and Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania revealed last October that he would not run for reelection either. Then, on Monday morning, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio joined them, saying in a statement that It has gotten harder and harder to break through the partisan gridlock and make progress on substantive policy.’

These retirements could be a helpful development for Democrats, too, as they provide the party with potential openings on what was already a decently favorable Senate map for them. Although the Senates rural bias still makes the chamber advantageous to Republicans overall, the 2022 Senate map doesnt force Democrats to compete on red turf nearly as much as the 2020 map or killer 2018 map did. In fact, no Democratic senators are running for reelection in states won by former President Donald Trump in 2020, while Republicans are defending two seats in states won by President Biden: the open seat in Pennsylvania and Sen. Ron Johnsons seat in Wisconsin. (To make matters worse for Republicans, Johnson is considering retirement as well.)

Open seats are one way to gain but they need to focus on swing states too. Warnock for example is up in 2022 I believe. Got to attack on all fronts and win seats.

An Early Look at the 2022 Senate Races[link=https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/2022-senate-races-initial-ratings/]

Larry Sabatos Crystal Ball[/link]: Democrats clearest path to gaining seats runs primarily though the Rust Belt, as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin seem to be their top offensive races, though they may finally get lucky in North Carolina.

We rate four states Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and New Hampshire as Leans Democratic, and these seem to be the most obvious GOP targets.

There will likely be more retirements this cycle, but they probably wont change the fundamental picture.
Georgia GOP Worries Marjorie Taylor Greene could hurt them in the Mid-Terms

[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/31/marjorie-taylor-greene-georgia-gop-cringes-464170]Politico[/link]: This is what a nightmare scenario looks like. With the party reeling in the wake of its 2020 unraveling when it lost too many centrist voters state Republicans now worry Greene will emerge as the face of the GOP, tainting the entire ticket with a stamp of conspiracy theory and extremism in the run-up to the 2022 midterms.

Georgia Republicans expect Greene will face a primary challenge, and some hope she could somehow be drawn into a tougher seat during redistricting. But they acknowledge shes popular in her district. Greenes primary opponent in 2020, John Cowan, is considering running against her again.

Senate Reaches Agreement on Organizing Resolution
After weeks of negotiations, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have come to terms on how to run a 50-50 Senate, [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/537121-schumer-mcconnell-reach-deal-on-senate-organizing-resolution?userid=57999]The Hill[/link] reports.

The agreement will allow Senate Democrats to take control of committees, which play a pivotal role in crafting legislation and holding hearings.
Democrats hold the tie-breaking vote with Vice President Harris.

Interesting guy.  Strong proponent of marijuana legalization, minimum wage and M4A.
He has been in the center of the hyper-partisan wars in PA.  They GOP dominated state legislature moved to disempower Fetterman and then refused to seat Democrats who had won the 2020 election.

George Will on Sen. Mitch McConnells (R-KY) project to shrink Donald Trumps influence over the Republican party:

He has his eyes on the prize: 2022, perhaps the most crucial nonpresidential election year in U.S. history. It might determine whether the Republican Party can be a plausible participant in the healthy oscillations of a temperate two-party system.
Graham Says Senate GOP Majority Runs Through Trump
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) offered Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) some unsolicited advice [link=https://www.mediaite.com/tv/lindsey-graham-tells-hannity-im-more-worried-about-2022-than-ive-ever-been-because-of-trump-mcconnell-feud/]on Hannity[/link] last night.

Said Graham: Im more worried about 2022 than Ive ever been. I dont want to eat our own. President Trump is the most consequential Republican in the party. If Mitch McConnell doesnt understand that, hes missing a lot We need to knock this off. Kevin McCarthy is the leader of the house Republicans. He has taken a different approach to President Trump. I would advise Senator McConnell to do that.

He added: I know Trump can be a handful, but he is the most dominant figure in the Republican Party. We dont have a snowballs chance in hell of taking back the majority without Donald Trump.

Perdue Will Not Run for Senate In Georgia
Former Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) [link=https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/1364228426958131206]announced[/link] that he will not run for the U.S. Senate in Georgia next year.

Backstory from [link=https://twitter.com/maggieNYT/status/1364234203848663041]Maggie Haberman[/link]: Perdue had dinner with and played a long round of golf with Trump last week. If Sununu runs, NH has to be in the top 3.

Nevada probably next on that list.

Ron Johnson Leaning Towards Not Running
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) told the [link=https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/ron-johnson-no-decision-on-2022-run-but-leaving-office-is-probably-my-preference-now/article_aa0160e1-c81e-5c2c-8bdb-7333c6b3e09c.html]Wisconsin State Journal[/link] that he hasnt yet decided whether hell run for his seat in 2022, although he said keeping to his pledge to not seek a third term is probably my preference now.

However, Johnson also said his pledge of serving just two terms is no longer operative: I think that pledge was based on the assumption we wouldnt have Democrats in total control of government and were seeing what I would consider the devastating and harmful effects of Democrats total control just ramming things through.
Why Roy Blunt is Retiring
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/03/10/roy-blunt-wanted-compromise-cordiality-he-couldnt-survive-trump-gops-descent/]James Hohmann[/link]:
Blunt, who announced Monday that he would not seek reelection, would no doubt like to be remembered as a legislator who adeptly and unabashedly played the inside game. But another, more melancholy way to remember Blunt is as a politician who found himself increasingly out of step with a party that demonized that skill set and who concluded that, even after the end of the Trump presidency, the cost of winning reelection and serving in a transformed Republican Party was simply too steep.

Said Blunt: I think the country, in the last decade or so, has sort of fallen off the edge with too many politicians saying, If you vote for me, Ill never compromise on anything.
