• Clarence Thomas …

… asks questions from the bench for the first time in 10 years.

[link=http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2016-02-29/thomas-breaks-10-year-silence-asks-questions-at-u-s-high-court]http://www.bloomberg.com/…ions-at-u-s-high-court[/link]

Justice Clarence Thomas broke his decade-long silence during U.S. Supreme Court arguments Monday, asking a series of questions during a case involving gun ownership by people convicted of domestic violence.

The queries came during a case over a federal law that bars firearm possession by people convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. The court is considering whether that law applies to a man convicted in Maine of assaulting his wife.

Thomas, who hadnt asked a question from the bench since February 2006, leaned forward and interrupted Justice Department attorney Ilana Eisenstein as she was nearing the end of her presentation. He asked her whether she could provide any other example of a constitutional right being suspended based on a misdemeanor.

Thomas followed up by asking whether First Amendment rights could be abridged and eventually asked more than a half dozen questions.
Thomas has said he thinks his colleagues ask too many questions during argument. His queries Monday came less than three weeks after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, a fellow conservative who had been one of the courts most active questioners.

As long as Scalia was around, he could just sit back and wait for all the relevant questions to be asked.

Here you go, IR, you’ll be happy to know Louis Farrakhan, someone who also left the plantation has just praised Trump.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan praised Republican front-runner Donald Trump for refusing donations from Jewish groups.

Trump is the only member who has stood in front of the Jewish community and said ‘I dont want your money,’ Farrakhan said in a [link=http://blog.adl.org/anti-semitism/louis-farrakhan-joins-list-of-extremists-praising-donald-trump]sermon[/link] he delivered this week. Any time a man can say to those who control the politics of America, I dont want your money, that means you cant control me. And they cant afford to give up control of the presidents of the United States.

So now Trump has both sides of the issue praising him, Louis Farrakhan AND David Duke.

You just can’t make this stuff up. Life is funny.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today in a 6-2 vote that domestic abusers convicted of misdemeanors can be barred from owning weapons.

The majority opinion, written by Justice Elena Kagan, concludes that misdemeanor assault convictions for domestic violence are sufficient to invoke a federal ban on firearms possession.

Thomas dissents along with Sotomayor.

Ginni and Clarence Thomas Have Done Enough Damage
No one should have to choose between devotion to their spouse and duty to the nation. But Justice Thomas has shown himself unwilling to protect what remains of the Courts reputation from the appearance of extreme bias he and his wife have created.

“For someone whose job is about judging, Justice Thomas has, in this context at least, demonstrated abominably poor judgment.”

“Perhaps Justice Thomas was not aware of his wifes text-message campaign to Mr. Meadows at the time. But it sure makes you wonder, doesnt it?  And thats precisely the problem: We shouldnt have to wonder.
The Ginni Thomas story grows larger
Its been less than 48 hours since the explosive text messages from GINNI THOMAS, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice CLARENCE THOMAS, to then-White House chief of staff MARK MEADOWS were published, and the story is really beginning to snowball. Heres the latest:

1. Thomas post-election, pro-Trump efforts didnt stop with Meadows.
In a Friday evening scoop, [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/ginni-thomas-pressed-gop-lawmakers-protest-2020-election-results-rcna21644]NBCs Scott Wong reported[/link] that Thomas pressed Republican members of Congress to protest the election results.

2. Legal experts say Thomas texts present a real problem for the Supreme Court.

One thing worth noting: This isnt just coming from liberal scholars. ADAM WHITE, a prominent conservative legal fellow at AEI, said that, in general, previous criticisms of Ginni Thomass political work, as well as calls for the justice to recuse himself from participating in cases, were overstated and unfair, [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/25/clarence-thomas-ginni-thomas/]write WaPos Robert Barnes and Ann Marimow[/link]. But, he said, the recent disclosures are somewhat different because they pertain to a specific course of events that did give rise to Supreme Court litigation. This does raise real questions about the need for Justice Thomas to recuse from future cases related to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
..

{longtime professor of legal ethics at NYU, Stephen} Gillers said the word interest was the key: By writing to Meadows, who was chief of staff and active in the Stop the Steal movement, she joined the team resisting the results of the election, he said. She made herself part of the team and so she has an interest in the decisions of the court that could affect Trumps goal of reversing the results.

….
3. Will the Jan. 6 committee call Ginni Thomas to testify?

Where things get really dicey: Investigators could ask her the name of the friend she was referring to when she wrote back to thank Mr. Meadows, saying: Needed that! This plus a conversation with my best friend just nowI will try to keep holding on. (Ms. Thomas and her husband have publicly referred to each other as their best friends.) Ultimately, they {The Jan 6 Special Select Committee}could ask her whether she had discussed Mr. Trumps fight to overturn the election with her husband.

Ocasio-Cortez to Clarence Thomas: Resign or face impeachment

Clarence Thomas should resign, she wrote on Twitter. If not, his failure to disclose income from right-wing organizations, recuse himself from matters involving his wife, and his vote to block the Jan 6th commission from key information must be investigated and could serve as grounds for impeachment.

Ocasio-Cotez is making a public statement of her opinion. It will never happen. Even should Democrats overwhelmingly win both Houses in a wave, I don’t see impeachment of Thomas unless there is something much more substantive than speculation shown.

Just an oddball thought.  I’d be fine with them changing the rules and stacking the court in such a silly manner that we had to have a constitutional change for the SCOTUS.  Like just blow it the F up.  Term limit SCOTUS or hell even make them run for the seats so the public can vote on the justice, and make sure they cannot get dark $ to do so.  The SCOTUS has become a political mechanism.  It’s a joke court.
Clarence Thomas Says Leaked Opinion Destroyed Trust
The leak of a draft opinion has done irreparable damage to the Supreme Court, Justice Clarence Thomas said at a conference in Dallas on Friday night, adding that it had destroyed trust among the members of the court, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/14/us/politics/supreme-court-clarence-thomas.html]New York Times[/link] reports.

Said Thomas: Look where we are, where that trust or that belief is gone forever. And when you lose that trust, especially in the institution that Im in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder.

____________

Yep, Clarence.  It’s the leak that destroyed the trust.  [image]https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif[/image]

Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice, pressed Ariz. lawmakers to help reverse Trumps loss

Virginia Ginni Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, pressed Arizona lawmakers after the 2020 election to set aside Joe Bidens popular-vote victory and choose a clean slate of Electors, according to emails obtained by The Washington Post.

Just days after media organizations called the race for Biden in Arizona and nationwide, Thomas urged the lawmakers to stand strong in the face of political and media pressure. She told the lawmakers the responsibility to choose electors was yours and yours alone and said they have power to fight back against fraud.

law.
The messages show that Thomas, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, was more deeply involved in the effort to overturn Bidens win than has been previously reported. In sending the emails, Thomas played a role in the extraordinary scheme to keep Trump in office by substituting the will of legislatures for the will of voters.

Thomass actions also underline concerns about potential conflicts of interest that her husband has already faced and may face in the future in deciding cases related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Those questions intensified in March, when The Post and CBS News obtained text messages that Thomas sent in late 2020 to Trumps chief of staff, Mark Meadows, pressing him to help reverse the election.

Ginni Thomas pressed 29 Ariz. lawmakers to help overturn Trumps defeat, emails show
The Post [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2022/05/20/ginni-thomas-arizona-election-emails/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4]reported [/link]last month that Thomas sent emails to two Arizona House members, in November and December 2020, urging them to help overturn Bidens win by selecting presidential electors a responsibility that belongs to Arizona voters under state law. Thomas sent the messages using FreeRoots, an online platform intended to make it easy to send pre-written emails to multiple elected officials.

New documents show that Thomas indeed used the platform to reach many lawmakers simultaneously. On Nov. 9, she sent identical emails to 20 members of the Arizona House and seven Arizona state senators. That represents more than half of the Republican members of the state legislature at the time.

The message, just days after media organizations called the race for Biden in Arizona and nationwide, urged lawmakers to stand strong in the face of political and media pressure and claimed that the responsibility to choose electors was yours and yours alone. They had power to fight back against fraud and ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen, the email said.

Ginni Thomas Corresponded with John Eastman:

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol has obtained email correspondence between Virginia Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and lawyer John Eastman, who played a key role in efforts to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to block the certification of Joe Bidens victory the Washington Post reports.

The emails show that Thomass efforts to overturn the election were more extensive than previously known.

The committees members and staffers are now discussing whether to spend time during their public hearings exploring Ginni Thomass role in the attempt to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.

A Facebook group that appears to be run by Virginia Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, could become a new point of interest in the U.S. House Select Committees investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The group, which CNBC reviewed before it was removed from public view, described itself as a new collaborative, liberty-focused, action-oriented group of state leaders representing grassroots armies to CONNECT, INFORM and ACTIVATE each other weekly to preserve constitutional governance. Although Thomas personal Facebook page isnt verified, it contained numerous photos of Justice Thomas.

The groups pages were removed from public view after CNBC reached out to Thomas about the organization. It now shows a notice from Facebook saying that its either been deleted or the privacy settings have been changed.

For decades, Justice Clarence Thomas has secretly accepted luxury trips from a major Republican donor, newly obtained documents and interviews show. The extent and frequency of these apparent gifts to Thomas has no known precedent in modern SCOTUS history..

Thomas’ friendship with Dallas-based real estate magnate Harlan Crow has allowed him to repeatedly experience luxuries well beyond his means. He’s vacationed on Crows 162-foot superyacht around the globe and flies on Crows Bombardier Global 5000 jet.

In June 2019, Thomas boarded Crow’s private jet to Indonesia for 9 days of island-hopping on Crow’s yacht. Had Thomas chartered the jet and yacht himself, it could have cost him over $500K. It wasnt Thomas first time on Crow’s yacht, the Michaela Rose. He went on a river day trip in Savannah, Georgia, and an extended cruise in New Zealand roughly a decade ago.

The justice has gone with Crow to the Bohemian Grove, the exclusive California all-male retreat, and to Crows sprawling Texas ranch. Every summer, Thomas typically spends about a week at Camp Topridge, Crows private resort in the Adirondacks.

If Leo’s name sounds familiar, it’s because the longtime Federalist Society executive is regarded as an architect of the Supreme Courts recent turn to the right and recently received $1.6 billion for a new conservative political group:

Clarence Thomas’ friend, billionaire, and Hitler memorabilia collector also bought multiple properties from the justice as well.

One of them that Crow bought is Thomas’ mother’s house and she is still living there. Crow also undertook extensive renovations/improvements at the place and reportedly even bought other nearby houses in order to improve the neighborhood property values.

No, quid pro quo isn’t bribery. Buying influence is not bribery.

It’s not bribery so long as no actual cash is passed, everything else is good. So say the Supremes.

Ron Wyden Asks Harlan Crow for List of Gifts to Thomas
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) asked GOP megadonor Harlan Crow for a complete list of gifts to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and evidence that the billionaire real estate developer complied with federal tax law in connection with the long-undisclosed largesse to Thomas, [link=https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/24/supreme-court-senate-committee-seeks-harlan-crow-clarence-thomas-gift-list.html]CNBC[/link] reports.

Said Wyden: This unprecedented arrangement between a wealthy benefactor and a Supreme Court justice raises serious concerns related to federal tax and ethics laws.

…Justices are generally required to publicly report all gifts worth more than $415, defined as anything of value that isnt fully reimbursed. There are exceptions: If someone hosts a justice at their own property, free food and lodging dont have to be disclosed. That would exempt dinner at a friends house. The exemption never applied to transportation, such as private jet flights, experts said, a fact that was made explicit in recently updated [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.uscourts.gov%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Ffinancial_disclosure_filing_instructions.pdf]filing instructions[/link] for the judiciary….

…If Justice Thomas received free travel on private planes and yachts, failure to report the gifts is a violation of the disclosure law, said Kedric Payne, senior director for ethics at the nonprofit government watchdog Campaign Legal Center. (Thomas himself once reported receiving a private jet trip from Crow, on his disclosure for 1997.)

It’s pretty clear that Thomas made a conscious decision to not report.  The LA  Times ran a piece in the 90s on it based on his disclosures… and after that story he stopped disclosing.
