  • Billing for EM services with minor procedures

Posted by lbc8 on March 29, 2023 at 8:11 am

How can my group find the information we need to start billing for patient visits/consults for minor IR procedures?

Why would you do that? Unless you have a PA

Its honestly really easy. See pt. Write a note with required documentation. Pick out the cpt code based on the time/depth of visit and new vs f/u pt.

All this info is google-able. (I Google it all the time when I forget the cpt code). SIR has lots of resources.

When I started I just used powerscribe to dictate notes (with template aids) and created a visit for billing in the PACS work list. Made it easier for the traditional radiology group billing company. Now I use a specialized EMR in my outpatient practice complete with easy templates that use for different pt types so that we make sure all the boxes are ticked for billing. (Specialized note for venous, PAD, oncology, PAE, and UFE pts). Lots of EMRs out there ( steamline, AdvancedMD, etc)

We make a decent amount of money from just the consults.

Last time I checked E/M codes are bundled into the procedure codes and not reimbursable. Check with a billing audit company, don’t what to trigger a RAC audit.

I feel that while billing E/M for minor procedures may be legal or permitted, it shouldnt be. Just be efficient with the procedures or have a midlevel do them. This is why we cant have nice things. Taking advantage of loopholes will only contribute to reduced reimbursement
