• Any good PPs in Atlanta or Charlotte?

Posted by Mstrange on July 12, 2023 at 6:09 pm

Are there any good PPs in the Atlanta or Charlotte area? Also interested in Raleigh. Looks like PE has taken over a lot of the groups in these areas…

I noticed the above messages about Quantum Radiology in Atlanta have been deleted. I can provide further details.

Quantum is a large subspecialized group that serves numerous Wellstar and outpatient locations around the Atlanta metro. It is a classic pyramid group with senior partners at the top and grunt labor associates at the bottom.

* Senior partners work at the largest hospital (Kennestone) while associates are shuttled to outpatient or satellite hospitals all over Atlanta with commutes ranging 30 minutes to 1 hour. Rare to work at the same site 2 days in a row.
* 4 years to partner at roughly $320k for associate years.
* Partner salaries are high ($700-$900k+) depending on the number of associates/non-partners
* 8 wk/year vacation as an associate, bumps to 10-11 wk/year as a partner.
* Weekend call is q3-q4. Day and evening shifts.
* Associates will work almost every holiday or holiday weekend. Partners work 3 or more holidays/year.
* Overnight shifts (6 days at a time) for minimum 2 weeks per year
* High volume call and overnight shifts, 200-300 cases, 70+ cross sectional. Day shifts are less severe but still busy. High volume fluoro slots for the associates.
* Quality of the radiologists in the group is average. Many Emory grads.
* Just about everyone burns out at Quantum but those that stay learn to be miserable/get divorced, and find new associates to dump on.

Happy to answer any direct questions.

Have a close residency friend in Quantum. He works like a dog but seems happy with what he makes. Long partnership track but atleast its not RP.

Got hit up by a recruiter today for a 2nd or 3rd shift jerb in Charlotte.

Join a team of radiologists providing services for seven hospitals and seventeen hospital-owned imaging centers staffed in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

Which practice would that be ?

Anyone know anything about the Raleigh group Wake Radiology? They seem to have a lot of open positions on job boards

Yeah. It does.

I have a friend in that group.   It’s pretty Meh.

I don’t think it has always been that way. I spoke to someone at a course in the late 2000s who was very happy. From what I understand they sold out at some point and that is when the misery started.

JohnQ Public – “new member” is completely full of crap.

Quantum Radiology is a fantastic group of excellent radiologists.  There are only several job openings because of the amazing growth at the WellStar System and outpatient centers they cover.  The associates and partners are happy and collegial. You need to do your own research and visit for yourself instead of believing the baseless opinion of a new public forum member who clearly has no idea what they are talking about.  Do your own homework and call your friends and colleagues who have actual direct connections to the practice and you will hear a different story. JohnQ – who do you know in the practice?  Where did you get your false information from?

If partnership track is truly 4 years @320k then it’s definitely a predatory private practice. Most practices these days are 1-2 years to partner and starting salaries are in low 400s for associates.

With all do respect to Menigioma123’s post et al. regarding Quantum Radiology this post is completely inaccurate. In the last 20 years only 2 associate rads did not make partner as we hire very solid good fits who have an engaged ownership mentality. QR is a 100% physician owned and run independent practice with 0% PE/Corporate ownership/control. In fact, besides being able to maintain our high quality one of the main reasons we did not sell is in fact our associates- we value our associates and doing that to them is unethical as they were recruited to be eventual partners and full owners and we did not take away their careers and give them a “job” as well as markedly limit their future earning power. How we value our associates also pertains to the operations. It is 100% untrue that they never see the big “mother ship” hospital and only go to the smaller hospitals- week one of their careers the associates start going to the biggest mothership hospital and do even amounts of their subspecialized areas equal to any partner. Call requirements for the most senior partner is the same as the most junior associate and rotations locations and percentages regarding doing any general radiology or subspecialized radiology are all evenly divided between partners and associates (as it should be). Yes, their is a 4 year partnership tract as the city/Atlanta moved that direction 12+ years ago (previously it was 3 yrs) and it hasn’t been changed because it would be unfair to the associates and partners that did the 4 years and we have zero difficulty hiring and hire our first/second choices from top programs. We have been hiring around 10 solid rads a year for some time now because we are in a fast growing system that is doing very well not because of attrition and we easily fill 100% of our spots with stellar rads every year. Rads at QR are very happy and our attrition rate is very low, mostly through retirement, if a younger rad leaves, which is rare, it’s almost always due to family reasons, not QR. Our associates almost all make partner and our partners almost all spend their entire career at QR and the newest partner has equal vacation, voting rights, and income as any senior partner- democratic and fair to a fault. We work hard, as do all rads and large groups these days, but we are a very data driven group that is very patient centered/focused on quality and service and the day to day work is very reasonable while the call work, although obviously harder, is managed appropriately operationally with data analytics to solve volume issue trends. The practice is extremely efficient with over 20 hired radiology assistants that handle all the scut work (calling results, getting docs on the phone, answering calls, etc..). Burnout is not rampant and almost no one is divorced or miserable, this is a flat out lie, rads at QR are happy and enjoying their careers. The numbers in that post regarding salary, vacation amounts, call frequency, volumes, etc.. are all inaccurate, associate pay is robust for the local market and goes up each year along with vacation and the partners consistently earn in the top 1% of all radiology practices nationwide with consistent generous vacation. QR is an extremely well run, 100% physician owned, democratic, fair, collegial, high quality, progressive, patient-centered practice that was ranked in the exemplary top 100 groups by the Radiology Business Journal as #1 in Georgia and #18 in the entire United States. Do not listen to inaccurate/untruthful and likely agenda driven posts, ask around and talk to people that know the group and our reputation. If at all interested in discussing QR in greater detail (for instance why we turned down PE) even if not interested in a career with QR, please feel free to private message me through this post with your contact info and I will be happy to give you a call and discuss QR and radiology in general. We are very proud of what we have built at QR and all the good it does for the patients, community, clinical programs, and health care system it serves. And in regards to the the untruthful agenda driven posts I end with this quote:

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”
