Diminished Trump Leaves 2024 Vacuum
[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/15/donald-trump-vacuum-2024-presidential-candidates-459536]Politico[/link]: As the politically diminished president prepares to leave office following a deadly pro-Trump riot at the Capitol and an impeachment vote backed by 10 GOP House members, ambitious Republicans are taking steps to burnish their own profiles and present themselves as future leaders of the party.

While some are gradually separating themselves from the president, others are publicizing plans to bolster the party as it heads into the post-Trump era. Some are even sparring with other potential 2024 rivals in plain sight, marking a strikingly early start to public presidential maneuvering.

The candidate for 2024 will amp up the populism rhetoric, while distancing themselves from the White supremacy/Qanon crowd.  I expect a minority candidate. This would create a lot of trouble for the democrats, especially if economic conditions do not drastically improve post-pandemic.

I expect no minority candidate would survive the Republican primary. Not for a generation at least. Unless it’s some guy in blackface.

It’s a pretty common phenomenon.

Don’t worry though. The right wing media will find Biden’s benghazi soon enough and then all the AMcons will all flock back to say what a scandal ridden catastrophe the administration is and how we’re only hours away from President Kamala.
Trump Is In a Historically Strong Position for 2024
Indeed, hes polling tremendously well among Republicans in the context for any future presidential nominee.

Republican leaders go against Trump at their potential electoral peril. Its not that other Republicans cant beat Trump. Well have to wait and see on that. Rather, its that he could be a very big voice over the next four years.

It depends

If the economic is good in 2023-24 Biden would win by a larger margin

If not trump
Could again lose the popular vote and win the electoral college

Its been a pendulum. Swings one and swings back harder the other way.

I think its too early to tell. Biden admin needs to get things done. If things go well for four years I think that peels off more fringe Trump voters. And really you dont need to get a lot of the votes to win.

nice little piece reported from Nebraska:

[link=https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-censures-omaha-ben-sasse-a9af5767d6c7e1b6cc8912a60aeda8af]https://apnews.com/articl…c7e1b6cc8912a60aeda8af[/link]

Ben Sasse bets political future on opposing Trump

Of the small number of Republican senators whove sided with Democrats on impeachment, only the 48-year-old Sasse is viewed as still aspiring to higher office. He is, in effect, betting theres a political future in trying to fight for the comeback of the establishment Republican party.

We still agree on some big things, he said in his video, pointing to values his party often promoted before Trump. Rule of law. Constitutionalism. Limited government.

Even in Nebraska, Sasse has some reason to think theres a market for what hes selling.

Trump Will Lose If He Runs Again
[link=https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-smears-dont-diminish-mcconnell-11613603493?mod=opinion_lead_pos8]Karl Rove[/link]: Mr. Trump may not be fully aware of shifting currents among congressional Republicans. More members now admit privately that Mr. Trump had no coattails in last falls election. Especially in the suburbs, some Republicans and many GOP-leaning independents refused to take his lawn signs or support him. Thats why so many Republican congressional candidates ran ahead of the former president.

Mr. Trump crowed Tuesday that he received the most votes of any sitting President in history. Then again, Joe Biden received more votes than any candidate in historyand seven million more votes than Mr. Trump.

Despite possessing all the powers of incumbency and leading a united GOP, Mr. Trump lost the presidency. If he returned for another White House contest, leading a divided party at war with itself and out of power, hed be wiped out.

[link=https://politicalwire.com/2021/02/23/an-unusually-valuable-poll-for-republicans/]An Unusually Valuable Poll For Republicans

[/link]DeSantis Leads Rubio and Scott in FL Presidential Primary Poll

The results were surprising: despite arguably weaker roots in the state, DeSantis clobbers Rubio and Scott with a more than 50-point (!) lead over both.

Obviously, things can change, but for me, this is some of the clearest evidence yet of where the Republican Party is likely headed in the coming years.

Primary voters decide the arc of their parties, and DeSantiss popularity here certainly tracks with a path thats Trumpist to a large degree. But DeSantis has also flexed a lot of power as Governor and seems to occupy the outsider governor lane similar to George W. Bush in Texas leading up to his presidential run in 2000.

This might just be where Republican primary voters head still hungry for the grievance politics of this era, but giving a strong edge to politicians who can match it with actual governance.

I also firmly believe that Governors make the best Presidents.  It’s the best experience you can have for the job, especially of big states.

Nebraskas most politically involved Republicans, many of whom have been itching to give Sen. Florida has never had a mandatory mask mandate.
The If Trump Doesnt Run Primary
[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/03/22/2024-election-trump-477353]Politico[/link]:

In a sign of Trumps iron grip on the party, most credible contenders are really only competing in the race if he chooses not to run. But the shadow he casts from Mar-A-Lago is already shaping the design of the contest.

For any other potential candidate going to early nominating states, said Stuart Spencer, the famed Republican strategist who advised Ford, you might as well do it, because you never know whats going to happen.

But if Trump does run, Spencer said, the path for most Republican presidential candidates is plain: You become a Trump-y. You endorse him.

Trump is Trump, he lamented. Its Trumps party.
