SNAcman constantly deleting posts absolutely ruins this thread. Better to not even have such thread than the garbage pile this has become.
I question why anyone would bother contributing

Can someone just delete this dumpster fire of a thread.
SNAC needs to stay off of threads if he is just thread sh**ting and ruining them.-
-
I would take whatever snack man says and divide by two then you may get something closer to reality. If he is truly reading the volumes he says, he can expect the lawsuits to start rolling in anytime. Even if he is doing average quality reads, the sheer number of cases means there will be more lawsuits. Doesnt seem worth the liability. I hope he isnt reading cases in one of the danger states.

-
We would have to delete most of the threads then Flounce. Some are clearly started as troll posts. Other start fine but then get coopted by people arguing what is best for some one they don’t know, often telling the other one they are lying about their life.
-
Flounce, you mentioning how you watch netflix while working steals my joy
-
Unknown Member
Deleted UserMay 3, 2023 at 11:29 amI thought your joy was making $4000 in 5 hours. Something’s gotta give.
I also lift weights while working from my home workstation, lift 1-2 minutes at most and then rest for 2-6 minutes between sets. You could do the same since you work from home but it might cut your annual income by 10%. Watching back to back seasons of Friday Night Lights while working might decrease it by another 25%. But it makes the day more fun and allows you to lift for an hour or do Echo Bike intervals; plus go to jiu jitsu or whatever other sport after or before work. Otherwise you usually can only get one activity in per day if you have young kids and also doing the family man thing. -
How many hour shift do you work? And of that shift how many hours are working and how many hours are side fun stuff

Deleted UserMay 3, 2023 at 12:44 pmI average about 2 days a week of breast at the medical center and 2 days a week at home, about 8 hour shifts.
On breast in the hospital, I listen to music but can’t watch Netflix/Amazon because it doesn’t look professional. I get the other breast imager to cover me from 11a-12 and I try to go to BJJ class from 11:30-1pm, back by 1:30pm. Other than that, I’m working 8:30p-5pm or a little earlier.
At home, around 8 hours at a time but hard to divide how many minutes working vs. lifting or watching netflix, it’s all mixed together. My lifting is only an hour or so, the movies and youtube are just on in the background the entire time, I only glance at it now and then listen to it mostly. If it gets busy, I shut it off and just work and my productivity goes way up. -
I personally never like mixing leisure and work in the same block of my day.
I really wanted to watch the Lakers / warriors game last night but cant bring myself to have it on in the background. ill get distracted and miss something. So I settle for the box score which refreshes every few seconds.
I found for me personally, I would rather get the work out of the way, then have more free time for the other stuff, instead of working longer, more relaxing shifts. I guess its just personal preference.
At the end of the day, we are both working, supporting our family, helping our community, and enjoying life.
I think me and you are the only 2 people on AM who are truly happy with their set up (I think I overwork the number of weekends for now but I got some loans to pay off so that wont be for much longer), even though they are very different.
I guess thats really the bottom line.. are you happy doing what you do. -
Flounce’s life appeals to me more than SNAC’s but I can see why each would feel it’s the best way to go.
Both have been told they are lying and attempts have been made to convince them and others they are wrong. That’s AM for you. -

This strikes me as somewhat juvenile? Do you really have the maturity to regulate yourself? Radiology is not a video game. Did you learn about medical ethics at Harvard of the Caribbean?
When you get sued I hope the attorney is smart enough to pull your case logs for that day.-

Eh I dont think the level of attacks on snacman are appropriate.

Deleted UserMay 2, 2023 at 7:59 amGoing back to the original post, it is not impossible (or even hard) to top 7 figures, but the usual way will be to have a main W2 job and a couple of flexible side 1099 jobs that you can read “concurrently with other workstation setups, KVM, etc…)” or during evenings and weekends. Be prepared to take 6 weeks or less of vacation… if any at all….
-
-
-
Most people don’t go away every weekend. Seems like you can always find several hours here and there on the weekend just sitting around doing nothing or watching TV or surfing the net. If you convert the idle time into reading then before you know it, you are making some serious money. Of course you need the right telerad company and set of credentials t allow you to read whenever you are needed to help. But these days, the demand for telerad is through the roof.
I had 12 weeks off at my old job but never took 12 weeks of vacation. About half the time, I was in town doing nothing. Just sitting around, kids activities, running errands. etc. etc

I know that. No need to try and convince anyone. I watched RSF’s exchange with you. Didn’t learn anything about them I didn’t already know.-
I am also happy with my setup.
~500k per year, 18-22 weeks off.
Rads is great imo. But I could make more if I gave up some weeks off but naaaaaah. Im good.

To me, it is the sweet spot of Rads.
Sure, most people want to build a portfolio first and I get it, as I did that already.

Id be happier work less in the form of hours per day. I honestly get bored with weeks off. But if I could work like 2-3 hrs a day, that would be ideal for me

We purposely run the group for lifestyle over money, but the money is still plenty good for my needs.
I also keep expenses pretty relatively low so we live well without me having to work like a dog.
Many richer (on the income side, my portfolio is healthy) doctors / rads than me but who cares.

Seems like an amazing set up. May I ask what subspecialty of Radiology and which region you are currently in? Thanks!

Agree with WD, that’s a nice sweet spot.
Broadly, 3k/shift + benefits is a pretty fair spot to be. If you want 20 weeks of vaca (maybe 170 total shifts), 500k-ish + benefits is very attainable.
A reasonable 200 shifts/year would be more like 14 weeks vacation and 600k + benefits.
Of course groups can really crank and go far higher than 600k per rad in just 200 shifts, but as a lifestyle practice that’s very reasonable without burnout.-

How many RVUs per shift. 50 would put comp at 60wrvu. Not many places can support that after expenses. Bay area, ND, SD, NE, IA WI, yes. Need 40% commercial at 175% of Medicare assuming 40% medicare, 10% medicaid, 10% self pay.
-
Maybe 60-70 wRVU per shift? Thats 12-14k per year for 200 shifts (less for less shifts or course), mid to high 40s per wRVU comp.
Very broad brushstrokes of course lots of things can shift things one way or another.
Just echoing WD and TE.generally I think those are reasonable ballpark PP #s in a lot of situations.
-
I’d say above 70 wRVU per shift. I do a healthy volume but like everyone says a lot of negative crap out of the ED also.
Do I make good use of the time off?? Not sure – I exercise and spend time with my kids a lot. Watch TV and movies, manage my portfolio, spend time with my elderly parents etc. I help out the wife with various child rearing tasks. I never miss an important school event for my kids. My kids seem to think it is normal the have Dad around a lot, alas they have no clue.
We tend to try to play around in the 35% tax bracket. This is a good sweet spot imo.
Keep in mind in two years top marginal rate goes back up to nearly 40%…. anyone think taxes are going down in the future with the deficits we are running?
It makes less and less sense to kill yourself for additional marginal income.
I plan to keep this setup going as long as possible until AI takes my job…..

This is real wealth, IMO.
There’s a lot of talk among doctors about early retirement, FU money, expensive cars, and luxury vacations… but IMO, spending time with elderly parents and taking them out to nice places, helping the wife, playing with the kids and going to their events and helping them with homework every night, and of course, squatting a barbell long after all your hair is white, is real wealth.-
Don’t get me wrong, I have significant issues in my life. But, I persevere, embrace stoic and buddhist philosophies and effort to make the best of my life and those around me.-

I am also drawn to Stoicism/Buddhism (mindfulness) principles but do struggle with the actual implementation. Seems like you have done well for yourself given your overall life perspective. Feel free to PM me if you have any good suggestions for any resources. Just received Holiday’s New Daily Dad book but haven’t started yet.-
Taoism of late has interested me a lot.
This concept of how we as humans / society dont value the passive aspects of life and nature and overly focus on just the active side.
What if being more passive (like water) and accepting the manner in which the universe takes our life path rather than fight constantly is the true key to mental peace and contentment.
Notice I dont say happiness. I genuinely believe this modern obsession with happiness is wrong – what we really seek is to get out of our own heads.
A few stoic exercises that help me a lot – one of my favorites in negative visualization. Every day take a moment to think of the absolute worst thing that could happen to you.. then realize that it hasnt happened to you. You will naturally feel more content with you current life. It really works.
Its a shame that stoic philosophy got buried for centuries by the religious movements.

Deleted UserMay 6, 2023 at 12:26 pmRead the Tao Te Ching.
“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”
Maybe the arch conservatives and progressives could learn a lesson or two.
A lot of ancient wisdom we have collectively forgotten, and then think we subsequently invent it.
It used to be we were introduced to this stuff in college.
It’s not about happiness, more about contentment.

I agree 100%. Sweet spot of radiology. Not going to find it in AZ, TX, FL, or most large metro areas though. I’ve never had a sweet spot job like that.

I’m in one of those states you list actually… won’t reveal anything further. Not in a big city but close enough to take advantage of the city amenities. About 45-50 mins to a major international airport.
It is possible to create a setup like this every decent practice, but Rads are greedy and don’t want to hire.
I’m not saying I’m not greedy also… heck, I want to continue to grow richer like everyone else.
However, my approach is more longterm, in that I don’t want to burnout too soon and I don’t want to regret not being around much when my kids are growing up.
Only AI could throw a significant wrench in my plans, but that is impossible to plan around.
